The Caravan is a non-profit professional theatre company, creating & touring original spectacle theatrical productions on the decks and in the rigging of the Caravan’s 100ft theatre ship, the Amara Zee.

After 20 years of touring as a circus wagon pulled by clydesdale horses, Caravan Stage sought to create a tall-ship venue that could provide the staging potential for the innovative theatre style of the Caravan. They came up with the Caravan version of a Thames River Sailing Barge, 30 meter in length, 7.2 meter beam, and a 1.3 meter draft. Blended with the best of contemporary marine and theatre technology. With its shallow draft of 1.2 meters and its self-lowering masts via on-deck winches the boat can access virtually any waterfront community. The Amara Zee incorporates the sailing masts and rigging for the scenery, light and sound equipment and special effects. The shows are staged on the entire deck, on the masts and rigging, on the water and land surrounding the vessel.

This would enable the Caravan to stage the shows on the entire deck, masts and rigging of the vessel, and on the surrounding water and land. The audience would watch the performances from the shore, dock or riverbank, the boat would contain a complete lighting and sound system, hydraulics, generators, and both sail and diesel power.

The Caravan Stage would be able to tour in any waterway and perform in any location, regardless of logistics and services. All we needed was four years of hard labour and two million dollars. Now, the dream is a reality and the history not only continues but is also a whole new book.

The Caravan’s theatre ship was built by the Caravan artists in Kingston Ontario commencing in 1993 and launched in 1997. As the World’s Only Tall Ship Theatre, the Caravan has travelled and performed in all but one of the Seven Seas… including tours of twenty countries in the rivers and seas of Europe, the Balkans, the Adriatic, the Mediterranean, the US Atlantic, Gulf coasts and Great Lakes.

In the summer of 2013, after sailing and performing in Europe from 2005 to 2013 (see voyaging map below) the Caravan returned to North America to continue sailing in the US and Canadian rivers, lakes, seacoast and waterways.
